Since we know they meet 17 times, it means they jointly cover 17 x 100 = 1700 m. Since A is the winner, he covers 1000 m and rest 700 m covered by B.

Now Speed is directly proportional to distance covered.

=> 5:s = 1000:700

=> s = 5 x 700/1000 = 3.5 m/s!
