Berthelot then synthesized methane (contaminated with a little ethylene) by passing a mixture of carbondisulfide vapor and hydrogen sulfide over red-hotcopper. Then in 1857, by reacting methane with chlorine, he obtained methyl chloride, which, on hydrolysis, formed methyl alcohol.
