aldehyde and pyruvic acid to afford a β, γ -unsaturated α-keto acid which then undergoes the michael addition with aniline. Alternatively, this reaction might undergo via the formation of a Schiff base between aromatic aniline and aldehyde, which then combines with pyruvic acid and form quinoline-4-carboxylic acids... Hope this is helpful to you..
