Although soap is a good cleaning agent, its cleaning capacity is reduced when used in hard water. Synthetic detergents are used in the case of hard water also because the calcium and magnesium salts of detergents are soluble in water. Detergents are more soluble than soaps and hence form more lather than soaps.

The synthetic detergent are superior over the soap due to the following reasons:
Explanation:
- The synthetic detergents can work in hard water that is the water containing the calcium, magnesium salts whereas the soap cannot. The soap forms the insoluble mass of scum which restricts the cleansing action.
- The synthetic detergent can also work in the acidic water but the soap cannot.
- The synthetic detergent is more soluble in water as compared to the soap.
- The synthetic detergents are prepared from the hydrocarbon like petroleum whereas the soap consists of vegetable oil as a constituent which restricts the cleansing action of dirt and grease.
