What is Caste system?

Caste is the another from of "jati" which is prevalent in India siince the Indian history shown the arrival of Aryans in the country. Before it, in the Rig vedic period, the Varna system was there which was based on the occupation of the people and not fixed by birth.

  • After the advent of Aryans, the concept of Superiority and Infriority in the society aprang up and divided it into four groups which was Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras.
  • Brahmins ranked first in the Hierarchy and considered themselves as superior of others. They were holding approximately every rituals in the  society and thus directs others about their work.
  • Kshatriyas are the warrior class and they were mainly came under the section of Kingship and their families where responsible to rule the state on the advice of the Brahmins in their court.
  • Vaishyas were the third in the list and considered as the "Uru" or stomach of the society. They were responsible for the production and selling of the goods in the market. They were basically the agriculturist section of the society.
  • Shudras or Untouchables- they were known as "dwija" or twin born. Brahmins considered them as outcaste and their shadow was considered as impure for rest of the castes.
