system for determining symbols of the element refers to

John Dalton in 1808 first used figurative symbols to represent different elements.

Chemical symbols are the abbreviations used in chemistry for chemical elements, functional groups and chemical compounds. Element symbols for chemical elements normally consist of one or two letters from the Latin alphabet and are written with the first letter capitalised.

The earliest known elements were not named according to the modern standardized rules. Most of the “inconsistent” symbols come from Latin names for the elements (or compounds that turned out to contain them):

Na — from ‘natron’, an older name for sodium carbonate. The metal that was discovered there was originally named natrium.

K — from ‘kalium’, originally proposed because the metal was extracted from an alkali (potash, potassium hydroxide)

Fe — from the Latin ‘ferrum’

Cu — from the Latin ‘cuprum’, from Cyprus (where copper was famously mined)

Ag — from the Latin ‘argentum’

Sn — from the Latin ‘stannum’

Sb — from the Latin ‘stibium’

W — from the German ‘Wolfram’, from wolframite, an important ore of tungsten

Au — from the Latin ‘aurum’: “shining dawn”

Hg — from the Latin ‘hydrargyrum’: “water silver”, from its fluidity and shininess

Pb — from the Latin ‘plumbum’
