For a system involving two variables (x and y), each linear equationdetermines a line on the xy-plane. Because a solution to a linear systemmust satisfy all of the equations, the solution set is the intersection of these lines, and is hence either a line, a single point, or the empty set.

A system of linear equations usually has a single solution, but sometimes it can have no solution (parallel lines) or infinite solutions (same line). This article reviews all three cases. One solution. A system of linear equations has one solution when the graphs intersect at a point.
