Carbanion may be generated by heterolytic bond fission.

  • There are two types of cleavage in a bond- homolytic and heterolytic.
  • In homolytic fission, the bond is cleaved in a symmetric fashion leading to the formation of free radicals.
  • In heterolytic fission, the bond (-CX) gets cleaved asymmetrically. If the heteroatom (X) is less electronegative than the carbon atom, carbanion is formed.
