Step-by-step explanation:

  • This is a well-known puzzle that just confuses the readers with the trickery of words so that a simple math problem will pose to be a difficult one.
  • Here, the three men each paid 10 rupees each to pay for the bill that amounted to thirty rupees. Now, the owner of the restaurant returned five rupees to the waiter and the waiter kept two rupees to himself and gave the men three rupees back, one rupee for each man. So, the question asks that 9+9+9+2=29 obviously, so where does the one rupee go?
  • The equation is wrong itself since 30 Rs. consists of the 3 numbers of 9 rupees and the three rupees later returned by the waiter to the customers.
  • If, we calculate from the initial stage, the customers gave 30 Rs. and the manager returned five rupees that means the cost that the customers had to pay was 25 Rs. The waiter took two rupees and gave 3 Rs. to the customers, then, the cost that the customers actually had to pay was (25+2)Rs. that is 27Rs. = 9+9+9.
  • Thus, the equation would have to be,

        9+9+9+3=30.
