भारतामध्ये राहणाऱ्या व त्यांची वेगळी भाषा व लिपी असणाऱ्या लोकसमूहाला भाषिक अल्पसंख्याक म्हणून गणण्यात येते. राज्यामध्ये राज्यभाषेव्यतिरिक्त इतर भाषा मातृभाषा असलेल्या लोकसमूहाला भाषिक अल्पसंख्याक म्हणून गणण्यात येते. महाराष्ट्रामध्ये मराठी व्यतिरिक्त अन्य भाषा मातृभाषा असणाऱ्या लोकसमूहाला भाषिक अल्पसंख्याक गणण्यात येते.

The Union Government set up the National Commission for Minorities under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992. Six religious communities, viz; Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Zoroastrians and Jains have been notified in Gazette of India as minority communities by the Union Government all over India.
