In his letter, Ranjan, while describing Tipu as a religious bigot who unleashed terror on Hindus, urged the government to remove chapters on the erstwhile ruler. He also claimed textbook lessons ignored atrocities perpetrated by Tipu, especially in Kodagu district from where he hails.

After receiving the letter, chief minister BS Yediyurappa had said his government will remove all references to Tipu from textbooks, a move that was opposed by the Congress and the JD(S).

On Thursday too, Siddaramaiah, opposition leader in the assembly, warned the government against removing chapters on Tipu. “I am told that the textbook review committee is meeting today. If the (committee) decides to remove chapters on Tipu, then the history of Mysuru will be incomplete,” he told reporters.

Primary and secondary education minister B Suresh Kumar refused to comment on the issue saying the government’s role will come into play only after the committee submits its report.
