The molecules of the liquid and solid must attract one another, For a liquid to dissolve a solid.

  • Water molecules pull the ions of salt apart by breaking the ionic bond that linked them together. After the salt compounds are pulled apart, the atoms present in salt are surrounded by water molecules. The salt is dissolved and a homogeneous solution is obtained. Therefore, salt disappears in water.
  • In sugar or sucrose, the bond between the oxygen and hydrogen atoms gives the hydrogen a slight positive charge and the oxygen a slight negative charge. Sucrose is a polar molecule. The polar water molecules attract  the polar sucrose molecules which makes sucrose dissolve in water. Therefore sugar disappears in water.
  • Sand does not dissolve in water. Sand settles down the bottom. Therefore sand does not disappears.
  • Calcium carbonate is the main component in chalk powder. In water the solubility of calcium carbonate is extremely low.  Therefore chalk powder does not disappear in water. The chalk powder settles down in water.
  • Sawdust is insoluble in water, therefore it does not disappear. saw dust is waste product of wood work.
