Metals and Non-metals are classified in Acids and Bases as follows:
1. Metal - Calcium; Base - Calcium hydroxide
2. Non-metal - Sulphur; Acid - Sulphuric acid
Calcium is metal and it forms basic calcium hydroxide.
- The calcium given here is metal. It lies in the second group and fourth period of the periodic table. (All the elements in group 2 are metals.)
- The oxides of metals are formed as metal reacts with oxygen, which in turn, react with water and form metal hydroxide.
- Calcium reacts with oxygen forming calcium oxide, and calcium oxide reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide.
- Calcium hydroxide is basic in nature.
Sulphur is non-metal and it forms acidic sulphuric acid.
- The sulphur is non-metal as it lies sixteenth group and third period.
- The oxides of non metals are formed when nonmetal reacts with oxygen. The nonmetal oxides react with water to give acids.
- Sulphur reacts with oxygen forming sulphur trioxide, which upon reaction with water, gives sulphuric acid.
