Following are the differences between acids and bases on the experimental basis:
Acids                                                       Bases
1. acids turn blue litmus to red           1) bases turn red litmus to blue.
2) acids react with metal carbonates 2) most of the bases are metal
and metal hydrogencarbonates to        carbonates and metal hydrogen  
give salt , co2 and water                       carbonates so no reaction here.
