The differences between the skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscles are as tabulated below according to the basis of the following categories:

1) Shape and structure

i) Skeletal muscles - Have long, striated almost parallel muscle fibers and are striated ( contain bands of actin and myosin which form the sacormere)

ii) Smooth muscles - Have a fibers that are long and spindle shaped and non striated.

iii) Cardiac muscles - Have long, striated and cross-linked (branched) fibers and are striated

2) Number of nucleus

i) Skeletal muscles - multinucleated ( the skeletal muscles have many nucleus in their muscle cells)

ii) Smooth muscles - the smooth muscle cells have only one nucleus in each cells.

iii) Cardiac cells - the cardiac cells have only one nucleus per muscle cell.

3) Action of the muscles

i) Skeletal muscles - skeletal muscles are under voluntary control, that is,
can be control by the brain consciously.

ii) Smooth muscles - these muscles are under involuntary control

iii) Cardiac muscles - the cells of the cardiac muscles are under involuntary control.

4) Location

i) Skeletal muscles - are attached to bones or the skeletal system.

ii) Smooth muscles - are located on the walls of hollow visceral organs such the alimentary canal and the blood vessels.

iii) Cardiac muscle - these muscles are located on the wall of the heart.
