Economic Importance of Pteridophyta
1. Food
- The ascocarps of the water ferns Marsilea are edible and are a rich source of starch.
2. Soil Bonding
- Pteridophytes bind to the soil and help prevent soil erosion, especially when planted in sloping regions.
3. Lubricant
- The microscopic spores of club mosses (Lycopodiopsida) contain volatile oils and are used as a dry lubricant in industries.
4. Nitrogen Fixation
- The water fern Azolla is used as bio-fertilizers in paddy fields since it has a natural symbiotic association with cyanobacteria which convert atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates which can be used by plants.
5. Medicines
- Some pteridophytes are used as natural remedies to treat insect bites, skin infections like rashes and minor wounds. The rhizomes of the Male Shield Fern (Dryopteris) is used to make an anthelmintic drug.
6. Polishing
- The stems of Equisetum are slightly abrasive, which makes them useful for cleaning vessels and polishing metals.
7. Ornamental
- Ferns are grown as ornamental plants in homes, and are also used in crafts and flower arrangements because they stay fresh for longer and because of their delicate appearance and varied colours. Ex. Florist's Fern (Ruhmora adiantiformis)
