The Taj Mahal is also one of the world's most iconic monuments, visited by millions of tourists each year.The Taj Mahal was built on the banks of the river Yamuna, between 1631 and 1643, by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan  as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Arjumand Banu Begum, who was also known by the title Mumtaz Mahal.

The biggest vulnerability of the Taj to flooding lies in its foundation: because the Yamuna touched the monument on one side (now the river has shrunk and moved away); because the ground slopes toward the river bank; and because it stands on a floodplain (soil saturated with water).
