Take a glass of water and add a teaspoon of salt in it and stir it.Observe the changes happen.
1.What do you think has happened to the salt?
2.Where does it disappear?
3.Does there any change in the volume of water taken? Give reason for your observation.
4.What conclusion could you obtain about the nature of particles from this activity

Answer:

1. The salt has dissolved in water.

2. It actually dissolved in water and now it cannot be seen.

3. The change in volume is so minute that it is negligible because the water molecules are loosely packed, they have spaces between them. When salt is dissolved, it will occupy those spaces. Thus, no change in level of water.

4. The particles are soluble in water as they are easily dissolved.

Explanation:

1. When salt is dissolved in water, water molecule breaks the chemical bond between the atoms of salt particles.

2. Addition of a teaspoon of salt in water, causes the salt molecules to  occupy free spaces present in water. Water is a fluid and it has free spaces between atoms and when a solute is dissolved in it , these free spaces are occupied and that is why salt particles are not visible.

3. The density of the resulting solution increases. Addition of the salt to water, causes an increase in the mass of the solution. Consequently, the density of the solution increases.

4. This process shows that particles of matter have space between them. The accommodation of salt particles in water shows the presence of space between water molecules.
