Take a seedling. Place it in a test tube of water to which blue litmus
paper is attached. Make sure that the roots of the seedling remain
immersed in water. Keep it for some time. Record your observation
and inference from the experiment.

roots generally make the soil more acidic near them,thereby redering nutrients available the theory of contact exchange proposed that a root absorbs cation from soil colloids by exchanging them at it's surface for H+ provided by the root.roots release H+ to maintain cation-anion balance within the plant.this, when the blue litmus paper is used to test the environment around the roots, it will turn red or pink ,when it comes in contact with an acidic solution below pH 4.5.
