We are here taking Calcium carbonate in a boiling tube , and are adding some HCl .When an acid reacts with carbonate then , it releases salt , water and Carbon dioxide as gas . That is ,

\sf\red{\dashrightarrow}\: Acid + Carbonate \to Salt + H_2O\:\: (l) \;+\; CO_2\:\: (g)

Here the reaction will be ,

\sf\red{\dashrightarrow}\: \boxed{\sf HCl + CaCO_3 \to CaCl_2 + H_2O + CO_2 }

  • Calcium carbonate is a basic salt. Basic salts are formed by the Reaction of weak acid and a strong base.
  • Firstly the Calcium carbonate reacts with Hydrochloric acid to form , Calcium chloride and carbonic Acid . The carbonic acid is unstable and weak.
  • Since the acid is weak and unstable , it breaks down to give Carbon dioxide and water.
