Glycosides are Acetyl derivatives formed when a monosaccharide reacts with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst

It is important in carbohydrate chemistry.

IMPORTANCE

Many plants store chemicals in the form of inactive Glycosides.

This can be activated by enzyme hydrolysis.

This will cause the sugar part to be broken off making this chemical available for use.

Most of such plants have medicinal value.
