Twinning occurs when a fertilized egg splits into two or more separate embryos, resulting in the formation of twins.

  • Identical twins are formed when a single fertilized egg splits and develops into two separate embryos, resulting in the formation of two identical individuals.
  • Non-identical twins, also known as fraternal twins, occur when two separate eggs are fertilized by two separate sperm, resulting in the formation of two genetically distinct individuals.
  • Twinning can occur in two ways: monozygotic (identical) and dizygotic (non-identical) twinning.
  • Monozygotic twinning occurs when a single fertilized egg splits into two separate embryos, resulting in the formation of two identical individuals who have the same genetic makeup and are of the same sex.
  • Dizygotic twinning, also known as fraternal twinning, occurs when two separate eggs are fertilized by two separate sperm, resulting in the formation of two genetically distinct individuals who may not be identical and may be of different sexes.
  • The reason why identical twins are always of the same sex is that they are formed from a single fertilized egg that contains only one set of sex chromosomes. Since the sex of an individual is determined by the presence of either an X or a Y chromosome, identical twins will always have the same sex chromosomes and will therefore be of the same sex.
  • In contrast, non-identical twins are formed from two separate eggs, each of which can contain a different set of sex chromosomes, resulting in the possibility of the twins being of different sexes.
  • It is important to note that the occurrence of twinning is a complex process that is influenced by a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Additionally, advances in modern reproductive technology have made it possible for individuals to undergo treatments such as in-vitro fertilization that increase the chances of twinning.
