Explanation:
We may soon have a new National Tourism Policy — a draft policy of the same is now doing the rounds with trade and industry bodies for their feedback. The policy — which touches on multiple points, ranging from strengthening institutional and governance framework in the tourism sector to introducing a quality assurance standard for tourism services in the country — has been mooted, by the Ministry of Tourism, GOI, after a gap of two years.
A National Tourism Board which sets the vision and broadly guides the tourism sector, chaired by the Union Tourism Minister with State Tourism Ministers and industry stakeholders, both government and private as members, its own secretariat as well as a corpus fund, is a key proposal which has been mooted In the policy.
The policy also suggests setting up of an Inter-Ministerial Coordination Committee under the Cabinet Secretary; a Task Force under Secretary Tourism; and a Policy Implementation Unit, as part of its plan of strengthening the institutional framework and governance. It also asks for a State Tourism Board in each state for better coordination and implementation of tourism programmes.
Another major proposal of the new Tourism Policy is on Quality Assurance and Standardisation of Tourism services in the country. The draft proposes a robust accreditation and standardisation system to promote quality of service and development of enterprises. For this, the proposed policy suggests to set up a National Database of Tourism Service providers to ensure quality and reliability of services.
