During the winter season, north-east trade winds prevail over India. They are off-shore winds that blow from land to sea and usually do not bring rain. Because of India’s topography however they change their direction and become northeasterly over the Bay of Bengal where they pick up moisture. They then blow towards the Tamil Nadu Coast which receives winter rainfall due to these winds...

➡When it is winter in the northern hemisphere, areas closer to the North Pole are colder than those away from it. As such, Siberian region becomes extremely cold and the regions to the south of Himalayas are comparatively warmer.

➡This is also the reason why the Indian subcontinent gets so many migratory birds in winter- they come here to escape the extreme cold weather of Siberia region.

➡Because of drastically low temperature in the Siberian region, pressure becomes high- as cool air sinks. It is just the opposite in the areas to the south of the Himalayas.

➡Winds always blow from high pressure areas to low pressure areas. And these winds from Siberia- during their course- pick moisture from the Bay of Bengal and cause rainfall in Tamil Nadu. These winds are known as north-east monsoon and winter rainfall in Tamil Nadu is attributed to them.
