To trace the path of the rays of light through a glass prism. When a ray of light (DE) from air strikes on a face AB of a triangular glass prism ABC, it gets refracted and bends towards the normal to the plane of the face AB.

The incident ray AB strikes the face of the prism PQ and travels inside the triangular glass prism PQR where it gets refracted inside and the ray is bent down in close to normal to the plane of incidence and then travels outside with a deviated angle from the plane of PR in respect to the plane of PQ.

The angle of deviation is the angle to which incident and emergent ray varies in degree to the plane.
