1. The speaker, Portia is in a courtroom in Venice. These words are addressed to Shylock. Shylock was about to cut a pound of flesh from Antonio's chest.
2. Antonio is a Christian while Shylock is a Jew. Traditionally, Christians and Jews were against each other. In the past, Antonio often insulted Shylock publicly, called him names and even spat on him.
Additionally, Antonio failed to repay the money that he had borrowed from Shylock. Antonio had signed a pact with Shylock. The pact clearly stated that if Antonio failed to pay the borrowed amount of three thousand ducats, Shylock would be allowed to take a pound of flesh from Antonio's chest.
3. The drawback in the agreement was that Shylock was legally entitled to one pound of flesh from Antonio's chest, but there was no mention of any drops of blood. Portia's intelligent mind catches this detail and turns the tables on Shylock. She asks him to go ahead and take the flesh, but not shed any drop of blood. If Shylock does shed any of Antonio's blood, he will be prosecuted for attempting to murder a Christian and his property and goods will be seized by the state of Venice.
Also, if he cuts even a bit more or less than a pound of flesh, Shylock will be executed. Shylock is reduced to being a penniless man, who is at the mercy of the Duke.
