Concept:

The average speed is defined as the total distance traveled by an object in a particular time interval.

Given:

Tarun's average speed while driving from his home to the office, S_1=60km/h.

Tarun's average speed while driving from his office to home, S_2=40km/h.

Find:

The average velocity of Tarun.

Solution:

Tarun's speed from home to office, S_1=60km/h.

Tarun's speed from office to home, S_2=40km/h.

Let the distance from his home to his office be x.

So the time taken from both home to office and office to home are:

T_1=\frac{x}{60},T_2=\frac{x}{40}

Now, the required average speed = Total distance/Total time taken

So, Average velocity is,

=\frac{x+x}{\frac{x}{40}+\frac{x}{60}  }

=48km/h

The average velocity is 48km/h.
