Given : Tarun bought a few pens, pencils, and erasers (at least one of each type).

Each pen costs Rs. 7, each pencil costs Rs. 5 and each eraser costs Rs. 4.

To Find : Which  cannot be the total number of pen, pencil, and eraser that Tarun has bought if he spent Rs. 100 for purchasing them

Solution:

Pen  bought = A

pencil bought = B

Eraser Bought = C

Total cost = 7A + 5B + 4C  = 100

7A + 4C  = 100 -  5B

7A + 4C  =5 (20 - B)

7A + 4C = 5k

=> 7A  - C  = 5(k -  C)

                                                  Total

A = 1  => C = 2  and B = 17            Total 20

A = 1  => C = 7  and B = 13             Total 21

A = 1  => C = 12  and B = 9            Total 22

A = 1  => C = 17  and B = 5            Total 23

A = 1  => C = 22  and B = 1            Total 24

A = 2 => C = 4 and B =  14              Total 20

A = 2 => C = 9   and B = 10            Total 21

A = 2 => C = 14 and B =  6            Total 22

A = 2 => C = 19   and B = 2            Total 20

A = 3 =>  C = 1  and B =  15           Total 19

A = 3 =>  C = 6  and B =  11           Total 20

A = 3 => C =  11   and B = 7           Total 21

A = 3 => C =  16   and B = 3           Total 22

A = 4=>  C = 3  and B =  12           Total 19

A = 4 =>  C = 8  and B =  8          Total 20

A = 4 => C =  13   and B = 4          Total 21

A = 5=>  C = 5  and B =  9          Total 19

A = 5 =>  C = 10  and B = 5          Total 20

A = 5 => C =  15   and B = 5          Total 21

A = 6=>  C = 2  and B =  10          Total 18

A = 6 =>  C = 7  and B =  6          Total 19

A = 6 => C = 12   and B = 2          Total 20

A =7=>  C = 4  and B =  7         Total 18

A = 7 =>  C =9  and B =  3        Total 19

A =8=>  C = 1  and B =  8        Total 17

A = 8 =>  C =6  and B =  4        Total 18

A =9=>   C = 3  and B =  5        Total 17

A = 9 =>  C =8  and B =  1        Total 18

A =10 =>  C = 5  and B =  2           Total 17

A =11  =>  C = 2  and B =  3        Total 16

A =12 =>  C = 4  and B =  0  ( not possible)

A =13 =>  C = 1  and B =  1                    Total 15

Hence can buy from 15 to 24  items

Any option which is other than from 15 to 24 can not be purchased.
