Task

Organise these events into the correct chronological order.

• 1183 Saladin conquers the city of Aleppo. The Muslims are now united under his leadership and are ready to fight the Crusaders

• Almaric invades Fatimid Egypt in 1168. Shirkuh and Saladin drive out Almaric and execute Shawar.

• 1187 Saladin wins the Battle of Hattin and later conquers Jerusalem

• 1174 Nur ad Din Zengi dies before he can attack Saladin. Saladin uses this as an opportunity to take control of Zengid territory. While he does this he makes a truce with the Crusader kingdom.

• Shawar asks the Zengids for help to become the Vizier of the Fatimids. But in 1163 he betrays them and makes an alliance with Almaric of Jerusalem.

• The Third Crusade is launched in 1189. Richard the Lionheart is successful in capturing some towns near Jerusalem but is unable to capture Jerusalem itself because he did not have enough soldiers.

• 1192 a truce is agreed. Jerusalem would remain in Muslim hands and Christian pilgrims would be allowed to visit the city.
