Task:
You are to create an analogy representing the cell. You may choose plant, or an animal
cell or a single celled organism.

Analogy:
An analogy is a comparison of one thing to another. A good metaphor helps us understand
the two things more clearly. (For example, the atom is sometimes compared to a miniature
solar system; the solar system is a metaphor for the atom. Each part of the atom matches
up with a part of the solar system. A cell may be compared to a sports team) Your job is to
think of a good analogy that helps us understand the organelles in a cell and their
functions, and then use that analogy to explain what a cell is and how it works. You may
present your analogy on a poster (Minimum size 11 ½” x 17”) or in any other format
It should include:
 Descriptive Title, Heading
 Brief overview or introduction to your analogy. Don't forget to say whether you
are representing a plant cell, animal cell or a protist such as a paramecium.
 A detailed explanation of each part of the cell and how it fits into the analogy.
Include all parts of the cell as follows (cell membrane/cell wall, nucleus,
nucleolus, mitochondria, ribosomes, Golgi apparatus, vacuole, endoplasmic
reticulum, chloroplasts, and cytoplasm.
 Include a diagram or pictorial representation of your analogy.
 A judgment – write a brief explanation of ways that your analogy does NOT
perfectly describe the cell and ONE way in which your analogy may have been
improved upon or didn’t quite fit. (For example, the solar system metaphor for
the atom is not perfect, because the electrons do not move around the nucleus
in predictable orbits.)
