Tassar or Kosa and Mooga silk are obtained from different species of silkworms which in turn feed on different food plants. They are termed as non-mulberry silks since, mulberry is the superior quality and most of the commercial silk produced comes from this variety.

Tassar or Kosa silk has a own feel and appeal. This copperish colour silk is mainly used for furnishing and interiors. They are generally, generated by silkworms Antheraea paphia and Antheraea mylitta, which mainly thrive on Sal and Arjun plants. In the states of Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Orissa and West Bengal, this kind of silk is mainly produced.

Mooga silk or Muga silk is golden yellow in colour and mainly cultivated in the state of Assam. It is obtained from from 'semi-domesticated multivoltine silkworms', which means a silk worm completes multiple life-cycle in a year. Antheraea assamensis is the silkworm, that produce mooga silk. This silkworm feeds on the aromatic leaves of Som and Soalu plants and is reared on the trees similar to that of tassar. Mooga culture is specific to the state of Assam and an integral part of the tradition and culture of that state.
