The tax free land grants during the chola period were known as Brahmadeya. It was a land grant that was either given to a single Brahmana or to several Brahmana families.

It range from hundreds to many thousands. Brahmadeya was more usually located near major irrigated works such as tanks or lakes.

In this practice free lands that were excluded from tax pay were gifted to the poor people of t he Brahman community to help them get their daily source of food and income. It was sold as a whole piece of land to a group of Brahmans or to a single leader of Brahmans.
