Munro
Saki was the pen name of Hector Hugh Munro, a British writer. He was
born in 1870 in Burma where his father worked for the Indian Imperial
Police. Munro's mother died when he was two, so he and his siblings
were sent to England where they were brought up by their grandmother

Munro returned to Burma at 22 to work in the police force. He contracted
malaria)and returned to England. After he recovered, he began working
as a journalist with The Morning Post and The Westminster Gazette.
He also took to writing both fiction and non-fiction.
In the early 1900s, Munro came out with his first collections of short stories which were soon
acclaimed for their dry, acerbic wit and surprise endings à la O.Henry who he was often compared
to. The characters parodied Edwardian high society and culture.
When World War I broke out, he enlisted and was posted to France. In 1916, he was hospitalized
with malaria, but soon returned to the front. A few days later, he was killed by a German sniper.
Though Munro wrote plays, two satires, and a short novel, he is best known for his over
100 mischievous short stories, including the most famous ones, The Open Window and
Sredni Vashtar.
