Relief is the difference between the highest and
lowest points in an area.
High mountains act as a barrier against winds.
This can also lead to rainfall on the windward
side of the mountains if they are in the way of
rain-bearing winds. The leeward side of the
mountains remains relatively dry.
For example, Mahabaleshwar (in Maharashtra)
lies on the windward side of the Western Ghats
and receives a lot of rainfall during a year. Pune,
which lies on the leeward side of the Western
Ghats, receives much less rainfall in a year.
