According to Nobel Peace Prize Winner Malala Yousafzai, one child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world. In fact a teacher leaves a lasting impression on your life. They inspire you, stimulate you and guide you to the right path of living your life. A few days back, I went to a reputed school in Kathmandu as a guest lecturer. I had my one hour class for Grade X students. At the very outset of my class, I asked my students what they wanted to become in life. Many answered “doctor”, “engineer”, “pilot”, “banker” and the list was long. But not a single student said: teacher or mentor or lecturer or professor. It appalled me to hear that none of them opted for teaching in life. Then I remembered the words of Jacques Barzun. He says, “Teaching is not a lost art but a lost tradition.” Is teaching profession good for nothing? Are teachers not important people? Of course, not. Teachers are the guardians and guides who help students to shake off ignorance, vices and evils of the society by means of education and enlightenment. In the words of Joyce Meyer, “Teachers can change lives with just the right mix of chalk and challenges.” Alexander the Great stated the importance of teachers saying, “I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well.” There is a deeper meaning in this quote. Teachers indeed leave a lasting impression in your life as they are the beacon of light. They are like the candles that melt at the cost of inspiring hope, igniting the imagination and instilling a love of learning. In the developed world, teachers hold a high position with high social status and earn decently. But the case is a little different in Nepal. Many do not wholeheartedly want to become teachers and the society still has a long way to give due regards for teachers as teaching is not just for making money but cultivating noble and novel ideas in the pupils. Once Abdul Kalam was asked how he would like to be remembered by the world: A scientist or Bharat Ratna recipient or the President of India or the Missile Man. He chose none of them. APJ Abdul Kalam wished to be remembered as a teacher! He quoted, “If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.”
