(a) Yes, he is correct. The value of x is 136.

(b) From the factor tree,

z = 2*17 = 34 .......[i]

y = 2*z = 2*34 ......[ using (i) ]

:. y = 68 ...........[ii]

Now,

x = 2*y = 2*68 .....[ using (ii) ]

Therefore, x = 136.

Hence proved.
