Let's check with an example.

Suppose you have two ropes, both of them has two knots each. You need to add the first two knots with the other two knots. But how is that possible? By tying the two ropes! Now if you tie the two ropes, another knot will be formed in the middle, thus giving you five knots!

That proves: 2+2=5.
