Bit Cut Paper!

Group Size: 2 students
Resource(s) Required (per group): An A4 sheet, a ruler and a
pair of scissors
Procedure
Divide the class into pairs and give an A4 sheet, a ruler and a pair of scissors to each pair.
Ask a student within each pair to cut the sheet into two squares and take one square each.
Ask the students to cut the square part of the sheet into two halves. Calculate the area of that
part by measuring its length with the ruler.
Further, ask the students to take the halves and cut each of them into two equal parts to get
four equal pieces. Calculate the area of each piece. Again, cut each of the eight pieces into
halves to get 16 pieces.
Ask them to compare the areas of the pieces obtained after every step.
Ask the following questions,
(a) On dividing the square sheet into two equal parts, what was the area of each part of
the original sheet?
(b) By what factor does the area of each part of the paper reduce after every step?
