Nowadays, technology has advanced almost to the peak. It improves the quality of lives of human beings and helps ease the burden of human at work or at home. Advanced technology also extends the lifespan by better medical care. It shortens the distance between people around the world the better communication devices. All these show advanced technology is good to us. However, I think differently. Technology can be a curse to mankind. It causes great impact on environment and society. In this article, I will pinpoint the potential risks in using advanced technology.
Advanced technology is the culprit of pollution. The more advanced the technology, the more comfortable lives people enjoy. Air-conditioners are turned on throughout the year. Vehicles emitting exhaust fumes running on the road restlessly. To beautify the city, lights are turned on throughout the night. All these consume many natural resources which are non-renewable. On the other hand, the heat released from air-conditioners and the exhaust fumes pollutes our air, leading to global warming and the formation of the hole in the ozone layer. Is advanced technology really a good thing to human beings?
Another curse to mankind is the problem of obesity. In the past, people used their labour to earn a living. In their leisure time, most of their activities involved exercise. The mean for them to travel is walking. With advanced technology, people nowadays mostly sit in the office and less labour work is required as it is replaced by computers or machines. In leisure time, people can sit in an air-conditioned room and watch television. When they want to travel to other places, they can take a car or a bus. Compared to people in the past, people nowadays do less exercise. Worse still, because of mass production, people can enjoy better food with good nutrients. That explains why obesity is a grave problem in many developed countries and overweight people are prone to many fatal disease such as hear attack.
Disasters may be brought about by advanced technology. Many scientists try to invent in an attempt to help all the mankind. Their intentions are good but unfortunately some of their inventions may be exploited. Take bombs as an example. Nobel, a famous scientist, found atomic bomb for good intention. However, it was used in the Second World War, causing millions of deaths in Japan. Technology is also used to develop fatal weapons like nuclear weapons. When these weapons are used, it is assumed half of the world’s population will disappear. Who dare say advanced technology do us no harm?
Many claim that advanced technology shortens the distance between people. It may be true in the sense that we can reach others more conveniently by using mobile phones or internet. However, these devices cannot develop real relationship. To maintain a good relationship with others, face-to-face contact, tones and non-verbal communication are also important elements. Many people nowadays use e-mail or MSN to communicate with their friends distance away. Their main tool is words. Some may even make friends on the net.? They may have known for over five years but they will not recognize each other when they go on the street. Can we regard this kind of relationship as real friendship?
All in all, technology does bring harm to human beings. After all, the advantages brought by advanced technology cannot be ignored totally. We should apply technology wisely and help those Third World countries. Governments should also stop using technology as a means to show off their power and threaten their potential enemies.
