                       Teenagers Indifference To Book Reading

Gone are the days when people used to find secluded nooks to enjoy uninterrupted reading. Reading for pleasure used to be so common among all age groups. The advent of IT era has taken its toll. Reading has been sidelined or ignored.

Bacon said, “Reading maketh a full man; writing an exact man, and conference a ready man.” Reading is an essential basic skill building activity. One’s language fluency is determined by the quality of reading. Besides, vocabulary enrichment, ideas collection, familiarization with different types of writing formats, speaking fluency, etc, all depend upon reading. In all cultures and civilizations, much stress is laid on reading. Schools, colleges, and other academic institute use reading as a major tool in imparting education to students. However, in the modern times, this activity is being ignored.

All great men and women have been great readers. In her novel THE STORY OF MY LIFE Helen Keller tells us the magic of reading books. Helen plays a glowing panegyric to books and the enlightening role they played in her otherwise dark life. in chapter 21 of her novel ‘The Story of My Life’ she shares with the audience the deep influence she had from the books since her childhood. She calls books her ‘friends’.

It is true a person who has the reading habit, never feels lonely and bored. The books open up a magical world for him or her and he lives among angels in the pages of the books. Books never let go the readers astray. They make them wise and pragmatic. We must endeavour to develop this fabulous habit of reading.

Social media, internet and networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have become source of major distractions for students. Young boys and girls seem to have become inordinately addicted to these sites. They are thoughtlessly and uselessly wasting their precious time on these sites. Wise people say time well utilized is time well spent, but the youth of today is only and only wasting time on chatting, messaging, uploading photographs and modifying profiles. The smart phones and 4G connections have made the situation worse. Accessing such sites has become so easy that young boys and girls are using these sites almost everywhere and almost all the time. Similarly they wait for their favourite TV programs with such intense longing!

The parents, teachers and the government must look into the problems being caused by these networking sites and must formulate a strategy either to curb or completely stop its fast growing negative influence on the minds of our youth.

We must not allow the wonderfully beneficial activity of reading die away. We must preserve it at any cost!
