If schools don’t teach kids “what they need to know for life,” then who will?
Even though schools educate students very well about Algebra and Physics, that is not enough for students to survive after their school years. Without having any general knowledge about what to do when someone mugs you or how to start a fire in the woods, people will never be completely safe. School should be the source of learning everything one needs to know. This is not true if schools do not give importance to practical skills. By teaching students to confidently fight back against a stranger or educating them about potential dangers of the real world, students can effectively take care of themselves properly even after their school years. Practical skills are extremely important in the lives of ordinary people.
By learning practical skills at a young age, kids develop character much earlier, as said by the California Department of Education. For example, if a child is taught how to fight a stranger at the age of five, they will not be very confident at first. As years pass, the child develops endurance as well as knowledge about the world. Finally, when the day comes that the child needs to fight, she will not fear the task. After practicing this for her whole life, she will only feel brave and powerful, resulting in possibly saving one or more lives.
