Wise men say, ‘EXCESS OF EVERYTHING IS NOT GOOD’. As far as TV viewing by children is concerned, the axiom is perfectly relevant. Moderation is always the right option. However, children are too young to practice it. TV viewing is both good and bed depending upon how you use it. TV watched in controlled manner and as an aid to knowledge and learning is a wonderful tool. For example, news channels, Discovery, Nat Geo, Animal Planet, History channel etc. can really enhance one’s knowledge and understanding about so many concepts.
However, uncontrolled watching TV can be very harmful. Children sitting in front of TVs for hours watching channels without any purpose can adversely influence their impressionable minds. This not only wastes the most precious commodity in the world—TIME, but also is unproductive in many ways such as affecting their physical and mental health. They may become exposed to unwholesome things. Sitting purposely in front of the TV makes children couch potatoes leading to health issues that further affect their other areas of life.
Parents and teachers must teach children the art of watching TV. Failing to do so is surely going to have repercussions.
