In the poem' summer friends' by Mary lamb the poet compares the bird swallow with new friends and the Sparrow with old friends .He also mentioned that the swallow (new friends) leave us in our times of misfortune but the Sparrow or old friends cling to us when we face harsh days and the days of our misfortunes.

So from the poem we can get some moral lessons that we should not leave our old friends as because old friends in life may be crossed but their hearts to us never narrows. We should always stand by our friends when they face mischance and we should not betray our friends when they face dreary days.We should not be selfish and also we should not make selfish friends.

And we all need a friend who sings with us in happy days and loves in dreary or harsh days.

The lesson we learnt that in life we come across many new friends but when we fall in trouble or we face mischance then our new friends leave us but old friends(may be crossed in life )will always stand by us in our harsh days.Message-

Summer friends by Mary lamb aims at depicting the inherently distinctive characteristics of two different types of friends by means of using the metaphor of bird. A new friend, having characteristic resemblance with Swallow, prefers to keep up a relationship only when we have our favourable times and departs us at the advent of harsh and unfavourable times. On the other hand, there exists another class of old friends, sharing traits of a Sparrow, who remain attached perpetually no matter how harsh the situations may turn out to be. Thus the poet aims at showing us the essential difference between the two and subtly expressing her preference for old friends.
