What is ATP?

Adenosine triphosphate is an organic compound and hydrotrope that provides energy to drive many processes in living cells, e.g. muscle contraction, nerve impulse propagation, condensate dissolution, and chemical synthesis.

How is it used?

The Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecule is the nucleotide known in biochemistry as the "molecular currency" of intracellular energy transfer; that is, ATP is able to store and transport chemical energy within cells. ATP also plays an important role in the synthesis of nucleic acids.

  • The Universal energy carrier of living cells.

  • The synthesis of ATP takes place in Mitochondria chloroplast.

  • It supplies energy when - a protein is made, a muscle cell contracts, a nerve cell sends a message or when a gland cell produces a chemical.

  • It is a nucleotide consisting of adenine, ribose and three phosphate groups attached.

  • The Pool of ATP is small, but the faster it is used , the faster it is replenished.

  • Karp quotes an estimate that more than 2 x 1026 molecules or >160kg of ATP.

  • ATP is remarkable for its ability to enter into many coupled reactions.
