Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born on 23 July 1856 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. He was later known as Lokmanya Tilak.
He worked in close contact with the masses. He started akharas, lathi clubs and anti cow killing societies. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was against western education because he felt that did not respect Indian heritage and culture. To spread his views among people, he started two newspapers - The Maratha and The Kesari. He demanded that the British immediately give Indians the right to self government.
Tilak joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in the 1890s along with Pal ( Bipin Chandra Pal ) and Lal ( Lala Lajpat Rai ). He led the Extremist faction of the INC and believed that the British would never give India its freedom though peaceful means. He became famous as tell "Father of Indian" unrest as he urged the people to fight for their rights.
"Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it" were his famous words. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was the first leader who openly demanded self-governance.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak founded the All India Home Rule League at Poona ( now Pune ) in 1916. He died in 1920
