History of Kashmir -
According to folk etymology, the name "Kashmir" means "desiccated land" (from the Sanskrit: Ka = water and shimeera = desiccate). In the Rajatarangini, a history of Kashmir written by Kalhana in the mid-12th century, it is stated that the valley of Kashmir was formerly a lake.
Maharaja Hari Singh became the ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir in 1925, and he was the reigning monarch at the conclusion of the British rule in the subcontinent in 1947.

- In early times, the state was divided into Princely states instead of Districts of today.
- Maharaja Hari Singh became the ruler of Princely states of Jammu and Kashmir in 1925
- He reigned The princely states till 1947
- When India gain independence in 1947, -British gave choice for the princely states to join either India or Pakistan.
- But, India depended ln British for variety of Needs.
- Jammu and Kashmir have its majority, (approximately 78%) Muslim. So, Pakistan expected it would join It.
- But, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference was secular and was allied to Congress.
- So,many Indians expected Jammu will join India.
- The decision was in the hand of Maharaja.
- On 22 October 1947 many rebellions from west invaded the state, backed by Pakistan.
- The Maharaja give a fought response but appealed for the assistance to India, who agreed that ruler acceed to India.
Maharaja assession was held on 26 october 1947
- When the government accepted it, it would to be the reference of the people after the state is cleared by invaders.
- After the accession, Indian soldiers entered Kashmir which result in Indo-Pakistan war of 1947.
- Next year, India took the matter to UN security council.
- They passed a resolution asking Paksitan to withdrew its forces as well as Pakistani nationals from J&K and India to withdraw its forces,by only remaining some forces to maintain law and order.
- UNCIP was set up to negotiate the withdrawal arrangement
- They tried to find a peaceful solution.
- It passed a resolution in Aug 1948 proposing a three-part process
- India accepted it but Pakistan rejected it.
- There was no withdrawal at all.
- India said that Pakistan would withdrew first and Pakistan said that there is no guarantee that Pakistan would withdrew.
- They both fighters two wars in 1965 & 1971.
- The countries reached The simla agreement, on a line of control between thier respective regions and committing to a peaceful solution.
