Explanation:

The last two films of Mahesh Babu, Srimathudu and Bharat Ane Nenu, followed a similar template. The stories were about a rich guy becoming the champion of the masses. His recent flick, Maharshi, directed by Vamsi Paidipally, also follows the same trajectory, but is a bit different. In Maharshi, Rishi (Mahesh Babu) hails from a middle-class family, who works his way to becoming the CEO of a company in the US.

In the process, he loses the three most important people in his life. When he realises that, his definition of success changes altogether. As Rishi sets out on a different journey, we are introduced to his conflicts, which are similar to Vijay's in the Tamil film Kaththi. Rishi comes to Ramavaram to win back his friendship with Ravi (Allari Naresh) and realises that he needs to become the crusader of the masses yet again.

Director Vamsi Paidiipally has a solid story with Maharshi, but he serves it to his viewers with too many sub-plots with abrupt endings. In the end, you do not feel for the cause Rishi is fighting for, because your mind is busy figuring out how fickle-minded Rishi is.

Rishi's character is written in such a way that he doesn't falter till the pre-climax sequence. Every single decision he takes does good only for him and his company. And he is impulsive, changes his decisions in a jiffy.

First, he comes to Ramavaram to mend his relationship with Ravi. Then, he fights with Ravi for a cause. Then, he takes up another cause because it's bigger than the previous one. And he comes up with a plan that benefits the entire country.

By the end of three hours, not a single sequence stays in your mind, and it all ends way too abruptly. In comparison, both Kaththi and Maharshi dealt with a similar cause, which is fighting for farmers and against corporates. Maharshi could have been Mahesh Babu's Kaththi, if not for the underwhelming screenplay.

Mahesh Babu, with his limited range of expressions, is perfect for the role of Rishi. In this film, Vamsi brings back the fun side of Mahesh Babu and it is quite refreshing to see him on screen in such a laidback character.

Pooja Hegde has literally zero impact on the story. Compared to her, Allari Naresh has a more well-written character, which he performs with ease.

Another drawback of Maharshi is that the story lacks a powerful villain. Jagapathi Babu could have sleepwalked the role of 'corporate monster' Vikram Mittal. He comes after the intermission and disappears within 20 minutes.

Maharshi has many definitions of success, which make for a handful of massy moments. The slo-mo shots of Mahesh Babu and the over-exaggerated stunt sequences are a bit overbearing after a point.

Maharshi has a meaty story in between several sub-plots. If only it was crisp and to the point. If only.

Mahesh Babu's Maharshi is not about a business tycoon coming back to his motherland. He has a bigger purpose here. But the film is good only for Mahesh Babu fans. Watch it if you really like the star.
