✯MOVEMENT AGAINST SATI :
Sati was practised in many parts of India. it was very common in 19th century Bengal. the great social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded the brahmo Sabha ( letter called brahmo Samaj) in 1828 Compaign against Sati and other evils affecting women.
governor general Bentinck supported Ram Mohan Roy and banned Sati through an act in 1829.

►the orthodox Hindus argued that the shastras did not allow Widows to remarry or to enjoy worldly pleasure. they also claimed that women were untrustworthy, too emotional and of low intellect.

►Ram Mohan Roy was challenged these things, basing his arguments on shastras, he proved that becoming a Sati was not religious duty. he showed that women could not be called on trust worthy as deceived women outnumbered deceived men.
