HEYA!

GOOD EVENING!

THIS WILL HELP YOU:

All the living organisms on the planet are basically divided into five kingdoms, of which, Kingdom Protista is one among them. Protists are a group of eukaryotic organisms (having a true nucleus) which are mostly aquatic in nature but are also found in moist places. These organisms are usually unicellular and the cell of these organisms contain nucleus which is bound to organelles. Some of them even possess structures that aid locomotion like flagella or cilia. They form a link between the plants, animals and fungi by having an ancient ancestor that shared the same features with members of the other kingdom millions of years ago (such as having a “true” nucleus).

‘Protista’ is a Greek word. These are the organisms that were traditionally considered as the first eukaryotic forms of living, main predecessors to the organisms in the plant, animal, and the fungus kingdoms.

The kingdom Protoctista is a diverse assemblage that can be described as "those eukaruyotic organisms which are neither true plants, animals, nor fungi.” They are united not on the basis of shared derived characters, but on the lack of characters expressed in members of the other kingdoms.

Protist classification and the kingdoms of organisms. Traditional classification imposed a division into plant-like and animal-like forms on the unicellular eukaryotes, or protists; in a current view the protists are a diverse assemblage of plant-, animal- and fungus-like groups.

Characteristics of Protists. Protists are eukaryotic organisms that cannot be classified as a plant, animal, or fungus. They are mostly unicellular, but some, like algae, are multicellular. Kelp, or 'seaweed,' is a large multicellular protist that provides food, shelter, and oxygen for numerous underwater ecosystems.

Protists are eukaryotes, which means their cells have a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Most, but not all, protists are single-celled. Other than these features, they have very little in common. You can think about protists as all eukaryotic organisms that are neither animals, nor plants, nor fungi.

The term protista, meaning "the first of all or primordial" was introduced in 1866 by German scientist Ernst Haeckel. He suggested Protista as a third taxonomic kingdom, in addition to Plantae and Animalia, consisting of all "primitive forms" of organisms, including bacteria (International Microbiology, 1999).

The taxonomic kingdom Protista is a collection of single-celled organisms that do not fit into any other category. Protists are a group made up of protozoa, unicellular algae, and slime molds.
