In 1774, Louis XVI of the Bourbon family of kings ascended the throne of France. He was a despotic ruler. Upon his accession he found an empty treasury. To fill his treasury, he began to impose taxes on the people. This measure was not enough. So the French society in the eighteenth century was divided into three estates and only members of the third estate had to pay taxes. The members of the first two estates, that is, the clergy and the nobility enjoyed certain feudal privileges and were exempted from taxes. This created inequality in the society. The people did not have the right to raise their voice against the ruler. Because of these conditions, the French Revolution took place.
In 1789 Louis XIV imprisoned the revolutionaries in the fortress prison, the Bastille. On 14th July, 1789, people gathered in front of the Bastille and killed the commander of the Bastille and released the prisoners. This called the fall of Bastille.
